(2024) Descubriendo el nuevo mundo

44 x 24.5”, unique prints

The prints in Descubriendo el nuevo mundo (Discovering the New World) are part of a portfolio of images generated with an artificial intelligence (AI) program that evoke Renaissance visual, historical, and aesthetic references. Using precise prompts for their creation, the images are collages that appear, at first glance, as traditional engravings; and at second glance, as digital prints of complex interpretation. In them, the landscape and the subjects that inhabit it are imaginary and fantastical, even though they resemble well-known and popular historical scenes. The portfolio’s title refers to the work of the Flemish engraver Theodore de Bry, who documented encounters between European conquerors and Amerindians, based on chronicles of 15th- and 16th-century travelers, creating a unique visual imaginary where the violence of the conquest is fundamental to the representation of cultural, ethnic, racial, and other differences.

Descubriendo el nuevo mundo is a project that uses the digital archives that feed AI to investigate how information and knowledge are offered to us as tools for critical artistic production to generate visual “new worlds”.
